Is Teen Patti legal in India?
Online Teen Patti played for money is banned across India. Playing for fun, with free chips or at home with family and no money involved, isn’t what the law is aimed at. Here’s what changed and what it means for you.
Updated October 2026
Short answer: under the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025, online money games are banned in India whether they involve skill or chance. Advertising them and processing their payments are banned too. Online social games played without money are allowed.

The Online Gaming Act, 2025
The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 received Presidential assent on 22 August 2025. It sorts online games into three groups and treats them very differently.
| Type of game | Example | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Online money game | Depositing money to win money | Banned |
| Online social game | Teen Patti with free chips, no cash-out | Allowed |
| E-sports | Recognised competitive video games | Promoted |
The Act also bans advertising online money games and stops banks and payment apps from processing payments for them. The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Rules, 2026 took effect on 1 May 2026 and set up the Online Gaming Authority of India to classify games and oversee platforms.
Where Teen Patti fits
| How you play | Status |
|---|---|
| Online, depositing money to win money | Banned online money game |
| Online, with free chips that have no cash value | Online social game, not the target of the ban |
| At home with family, no money | Not an online game, outside the Act |
| At home for money | State gambling laws apply, and they vary |
For years, court cases about Teen Patti and Rummy turned on whether they were games of skill or chance. The 2025 Act ends that debate for online money games: it bans them either way.
What it means for players
The Act’s penalties target operators, promoters and payment providers, and it treats players more as victims than offenders. Even so:
- Money you put into a banned app may be impossible to get back.
- Payment routes to such apps are being cut off, so deposits and withdrawals can fail or be frozen.
- An app still taking money from Indian users is operating against the law, which puts your money and data at risk.
That’s why we don’t describe bonuses, deposits or withdrawals for any app, and why we advise against adding money to any Teen Patti app.
State laws
Several states had their own bans on gambling or online gaming before the central Act, including Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Odisha, Sikkim, Nagaland and Meghalaya. Home games played for money fall under state gambling laws, which differ from state to state.
Court challenges
Challenges to the Act were moved to the Supreme Court of India in September 2025 and are still being heard. The ban applies unless the Court rules otherwise. We’ll update this page if that changes.
Is Teen Patti legal? FAQ
Is playing Teen Patti online illegal in India?
Playing online Teen Patti for money is banned under the 2025 Act. Playing with free chips and no money involved isn’t the target of the ban.
Will I be punished for playing a money game?
The Act’s penalties are aimed at operators, advertisers and payment providers rather than players. But you risk losing any money you put in, and your payment accounts may be flagged.
Is Teen Patti Gold legal?
Teen Patti Gold uses virtual chips that can’t be cashed out, which makes it an online social game. Social games are allowed under the Act.
Is playing Teen Patti at home for money legal?
Home games aren’t online games, so the 2025 Act doesn’t cover them. State gambling laws do, and they vary. Playing with no money at all is the safe choice.
Does the skill vs chance argument still matter?
Not for online money games. The 2025 Act bans them whether they’re based on skill, chance or both.
